No pay, no cure--can our hospitals be salvaged?
نویسنده
چکیده
One of the worst-affected hospitals is the southern hemisphere’s largest, the sprawling 2 800-bed Chris Hani Baragwanath in Soweto, where nonpayment shortages range from clean bed linen and food to life-saving surgical equipment. Surgeons reached the end of their tether in March when they were unable to order life-saving CT scans and were also forced to risk potentially life-threatening surgical procedures owing to the lack of repair, replacement or supplementation of surgical microscopes, aspirators and drills.

Medicare's flagship hospital pay-for-performance program, the Premier Hospital Quality Incentive Demonstration, began in 2003 but changed its incentive design in late 2006. The agent offers a c...

متن کاملMeasuring Hospital Performance Using Mortality Rates: An Alternative to the RAMR
Background The risk-adjusted mortality rate (RAMR) is used widely by healthcare agencies to evaluate hospital performance. The RAMR is insensitive to case volume and requires a confidence interval for proper interpretation, which results in a hypothesis testing framework. Unfamiliarity with hypothesis testing can lead to erroneous interpretations by the public and other stakeholders. We argue t...
